About Me:
My name is Piper and I think I’m rather creative and ambitious. I was born in Portland and have lived here my whole life. I live with my mom, dad, older brother, and my lovely labradoodle, Rosie. I love to travel and experience different cultures. I’ve been to places all over Europe and I’m excited to go to other places in the future such as Japan this summer. My favorite out of cats and dogs is probably both, even though I’m allergic to cats and dogs. Throughout the day my brother constantly sends me pictures of cute animals, which I enjoy seeing. He also sends me memes. Too many memes. I love reading and I read constantly, usually re-reading an old book on my bookshelf. I also enjoy listening to audiobooks throughout the day. I also have a love for ceramics, thus me being in 3D art. I really enjoy working with my hands to create new pieces of art. Wire-sculpture is also something I like to do. I’m also double-capstoning in Theatre and I’m in Masters, so obviously I love to act. I’m not very good at drawing but I also like to do that in my spare time. These are the things that define me as a artist.
My capstone theme is “Abstract Animals.” I chose this subject for my theme because I wanted to expand my sculpture abilities and try to sculpt realistic animals and put a slight twist of abstractness in with the paint and other media I use. I was also inspired to create these pieces for my capstone because I love animals. I explore this theme when I make my pieces in class with clay. I usually start with a rather large lump of clay which I take and shape into the body of the animal I want to create, then I sculpt a head out of the rest of the clay with some shaping tools and attach it to the torso. After I’ve created the sculpture it goes into the kiln where it gets bisque fired, the firing of greenware into bisque ware, when I get them out of the kiln I paint my sculptures with acrylic paint in any kind of abstract design I feel represents the animal I’ve made. When I make these sculptures I usually associate them with an emotion, for example, the lion that I made, “Polka-dotted Lion” I pair this piece with mischievous emotions. I loved experimenting with my theme in my capstone gallery pieces, it was interesting to see how I could change the sculptures I made into something a bit more interesting, like a rainbow giraffe. I’ve spent my year making these ceramic creations for my capstone, so I hope you enjoy seeing them!
